Dear Parents and Pupils

As salamo aleikum wa rahmatullah.

As we all know, reading is the key to success.

To encourage our children to read, Al-Hijrah has introduced the

                                            Accelerated Reader (AR) Programme.

This internationally-renowned programme is recommended by OFSTED and is widely acknowledged as being able to successfully motivate pupils to be more effective and enthusiastic readers.

The programme aims to match pupils with the right level of book – a level that is hard enough to challenge and stretch them …but which is not too difficult so as to deter them.  How does this happen?

Having sat a Star Reader test to establish their reading ability, pupils are informed of their current ‘reading age’, and then introduced to a range of suitable books.  This range is known as their ZPD (zone of proximal development) and is based on their star reading test which pupils take at least once each term.  ZPDs are colour coded and pupils are encouraged to choose books with their recommended colour codes from the school library.

                                                                    ar guide

It is recommended that pupils read at least 30 minutes every day.  In school, we are encouraging regular reading…but families should also encourage their children to put aside some quality reading time every day as well.

As soon as pupils have finished their book, they should take the on-line Accelerated Reader reading quizzes which will evaluate how much they have understood the book.  This data is then available to teachers so that pupils can be guided in how to improve their reading habits.

Pupils can access the on-line tests either from home or from one of the school computers; instructions as to how to take the test are available below.

Immediately after, they should choose another AR book from the school library.  Alternatively, they could research another book which has an AR quiz and borrow the book for their local library. ‘AR friendly’ books can be found on: www.arbookfind.co.uk

What next?  Children should:

  • pack their Accelerated Reader books into their bags every day
  • read every day at home (TRY TO FIND TIME TO LISTEN TO THEM READING – IT CAN MAKE A MASSIVE DIFFERENCE TO A CHILD’S ENJOYMENT AND UNDERSTANDING OF A BOOK)
  • take the AR reading quiz as soon as they have finished the book (see above for the link to the quiz)
  • choose another book ….they should have two on the go at any time.

Also available on the school’s website is the official Parent’s Guide to Accelerated Reader (see above for the link), but if you have any further questions, please contact Muhammad Imran.  (m.imran@al-hijrah.bham.sch.uk)

Thank you for encouraging your child to build up their passion for reading –  insha’Allah this will become a life-long love of books.

Best wishes and salaams,

M. Imran
